5th Annual Mid Summer Classic Tournament

Maine Sports Arena
15 Lund Road
Saco, ME 04072

Doors open at 7:30am. Competition starts at 8:30am. Tournaments are an all-day event.

For our second tournament of 2025, we’ll be joining our friends from Nine Tigers Kung Fu & Zodiac Combat Sports for their fifth annual Mid Summer Classic Tournament.

Competing is not a mandatory part of the Metrowest Kung Fu curriculum, but it’s an important part of a student’s development in the arts of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Competition holds a mirror up to the student and the reflection shows where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are in their training.

As with other competitive sports, it’s also a good opportunity for students to test themselves by performing in front of a crowd, to win humbly and lose gracefully.

Importantly, it’s also an opportunity to meet other martial arts practitioners and witness other styles of martial arts.

We hope our school will have a strong representation at this event, both in terms of the number of competitors, as well as the quality of our Kung Fu and Tai Chi!

Push Hands

Push Hands

Tai Chi students will be practicing Push Hands.

Push Hands 推手 (Tuī Shǒu) is a reactive skill, involving two people trying to off-balance each other using Taiji principles.

We primarily practice Yang Style Fixed Step.

Using size or strength to overpower an opponent with muscular force is not in alignment with Taiji principles; as such, our Push Hands is slow, gentle, and beginner-friendly.

We build up with cooperative drills and eventually progress to more competitive matches. The goal of our Push Hands is to make sure we understand how are Taiji postures work in a practical way, helping us to strengthen our structure, body awareness, and sensitivity to our partner.

It is beginner-friendly and open to all Tai Chi and Kung Fu students.

Maynard Drum Circle

ello fellow drummers, dancers, and friends!

November may bring colder weather, drab vegetation, and sunsets before 5pm, but it also brings my birthday - and this year it's a big one, ending in 0!  It would mean so much to me to celebrate this milestone with you all.  There will be drumming, dancing, and cake!  NO gifts please, but feel free to bring something yummy to share.

Date: Sunday, 11/23

Time: 2-4:30pm

Location: Metrowest Kung Fu - 69 Main Street, Maynard, MA

Cost: $5/adult (cash or Venmo), free for kids 12 and under

Now for the nitty gritty!

● The MDC is a freestyle drum & dance event. No hand-drum or dance experience is required, and all skill levels are welcome!

● There is ample street parking, as well as the "basin" parking lot flanked by Summer, Nason and Main Streets. Since it's a Sunday, parking is free.

● Kids are absolutely welcome to attend (and participate!) but require adult supervision.

● There will be a wide selection of percussive instruments for anyone who needs to borrow, but you're encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Didgeridoos, Native American flutes, rhythm bones, etc. are also welcome.

● Several folding chairs and stools will be available, but you may want to bring your own for maximum comfort.

● You can arrive at any time (doors will open at 1:45pm) and leave when you must.

● There will be a short social/snack break in the middle. Water and snacks will be provided, though you are welcome to bring something to share if you'd like.

● I will be raffling off something drum-related, TBD - you'll just have to come to the drum circle to find out!

● As always, please remember to remove your street shoes upon entering, in respect to the guan which Eliot has so graciously been letting us use for the MDC.

Feel free to forward this email to anyone who you think would be interested in participating! You can also find this event on Facebook (even if you don't have a FB account) at this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BQv4tjwcs/ - please share widely! RSVPs are encouraged so that I have a rough idea of how many people are coming and how much food to bring.

Please don't hesitate to reach out to me (MaynardDrumCircle at gmail dot com) with any questions.

I hope to see lots of familiar faces and some new ones too!

Thanks!

Lion Dance Workshop with Shitaigong Gregg
May

Lion Dance Workshop with Shitaigong Gregg

Lion dancers from Authentic Shaolin Kung Fu perform a “stack”, in which the lion “head” stand’s on the “tail’s” thighs, chest, shoulders, or head.

Team Hóngshī 红狮 will be learning traditional lion dancing techniques from Shitaigong Gregg.

Paraphrased from Shitaigong’s website:

“The lion dance, also called the 'lion lantern', is a form of traditional dance performed on joyous festivals and important occasions, such as business grand openings, weddings, and the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year). It is a dance which imitates a lion's various movements and actions, performed by a pair of dancers in a lion costume, accompanied by the music of beating drums, gongs, and cymbals.

It is believed that the lion is an auspicious animal that brings good luck. Therefore, a lion dance is performed to pray for good luck during the Spring Festival or during other celebrations.

The lion dance is an excellent Chinese folk art that has spread across the world. The parading lions run along the streets to bring good will and luck to everyone they meet. They visit stores, restaurants and businesses.

The Lion Dance Troupes are usually accompanied by their "laughing Buddha" buddy. The Buddha wears a mask and robe, and tantalizes the lion with a fan to make him jump, roll around, lie down, etc.

As they wind down the streets and locales, people along the way will “feed” the lions red envelopes with money inside by handing the money through the lion’s mouth. This is supposed to bring good luck and fortune and is considered a donation for the martial arts school setting up the performance.

The Chinese lion dance has close relations to Kung Fu and the dancers are usually martial art members of the school. They practice in the school and train hard to master the skill as one of the disciplines of the martial art. In general, it is seen that if a school has a capable troupe with many 'lions', it demonstrates the success of the school.”

Cost: $50/student

The next Tai Chi test will take place Saturday April 11th, 10-11am at the Maynard school.

If you wish to test for your next sash, you should have your charting completed by Saturday March 28th. You will not be permitted to test if your charting is not complete or you have any outstanding invoices, including the $35 sash fee. Sash fee may be paid online.

This is a formal occasion - you should arrive in full uniform; school t-shirt (tucked in), training pants, Tai Chi/Kung Fu shoes, and sash (if applicable.) You should have clean hygiene and a sharp appearance.

If you have finished your charting but cannot attend April 11th, contact Shifu Eliot to make alternate arrangements.

Students who are not testing are encouraged to participate in the test in support of their classmates. Spectators are welcome, photos and videos are encouraged!
