Three Section Staff Seminar with Shifu Gregg Zilb ~ August 23rd 2025
Saturday August 23rd, Shifu Gregg of Authentic Shaolin Kung Fu visited to run a workshop on short sticks and three section staff.
First we worked on short sticks, learning a short form, a two-person form, and several application drills. Then we shifted gears to three section staff, working several basic techniques, smaller combinations, and then finally the beginning of Shifu Gregg’s three section staff form.
The three section staff is a very difficult weapon to learn, and I’m really proud of my students and classmates for picking it up so quickly and rolling so easily with the inevitable bruises of hitting oneself with the staff while learning.
Shifu Gregg is my martial grandfather (Shīgōng - 師公). He’s a good teacher and his enthusiasm for Kung Fu is absolutely contagious. It is also always such a joy to have several generations of our Kung Fu family working together. In this case, FOUR generations! (My students > me > my teacher Shifu Gary > his teacher Shigong Gregg). I’ve been practicing different styles of martial arts since the early 1990s and I can say from experience that it’s rare to have two or three generations training together, but four is damned near unheard of.
So, I came away from the seminar tired but very happy.
