The Importance of Being a Good Citizen

"Fear is a warning to be careful, just as pain is a warning that something is wrong with your body. EVERYONE feels fear, even if they do not want to admit it. When you become a Black Sash, you will still feel fear, the only difference is that as a Black Sash, you will know how to overcome it.You have already learned this, physically, through your training. For example, you have overcome the fear of embarrassment by performing your forms in front of the entire class. You have overcome the fear of getting hit in sparring. You have overcome the fear of speaking in front of a group of people. In the same way, you should learn to be a good citizen, and overcome the fear of standing up for your principles. We live in a country where we have the freedom to express ourselves openly. It is your duty to make your choices and your views known. It is ALSO your responsibility to protect the rights of others to have different views and beliefs. By protecting the rights of all, you protect your own rights. Being a good citizen means not being afraid to help others in trouble, and be willing to stand up as a witness. Too many people today are afraid to get involved, but in order to make things better, someone has to have the courage to get things started and see them through. At Metrowest Kung Fu, we hope that we are training YOU to be that someone."
